MTN, THE JOY OF DEBTORS

It was a peaceful night, a kind we had never experienced since the establishment of the Young Blood club and bar. It was as if God had answered our prayers, and for some reason, the bar was shut down.

Rumour has it that illegal activity was carried out, attracting the law enforcement agency. Whatever the truth might be, it was about time we had peace and quiet.

I lay in my bed, reminiscing on the many sleepless nights I had. Just as I was drifting into the dream world on my succulent and therapeutic bed, a piercing scream jolted me back to reality.

"What! It's a lie, it's a lie, it's a lie!" The room trembled at the sound of Ronke, who sounded like a loop placed on repeat.

Half asleep, half awake, I hurried down the stairs, tumbling like Humpty Dumpty. It took a few bones left in me to lift myself. I was like an abomination that survived a car crash.

I could not measure my anger and my pain. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, I heard Ronke giggling. i was on fire.

"You mean MTN has issues due to a recent upgrade, and it automatically cleared off every outstanding debt of those who borrowed airtime?" She went quiet for a while.

I don’t know which was a shock to me, the fact that MTN's issues and losses were a big blow to the company or that I almost died for no serious reason. I slowly dragged my feet towards Ronke, bent on dishing out a piece of my mind to her when she broke the silence.

"So you mean my twenty-thousand-naira debt has been cleared?"

I froze. My brain malfunctioned for a second as I tried to process how a person with a debt of 20,000 naira accumulated over a long period of time could sleep peacefully. I had married a serial killer, and I didn't know.

"You have a debt of twenty thousand naira, and you never told me?" She was within my reach as I found solace in the strength of a chair beside her.

"Dear, it's a long story, and I must confess I never dreamt a day like this would come. There is actually nothing God cannot do," she giggled. If happiness was a person, that person is my wife. In the three years of our marriage, I have never seen her face glow this much.

I was taken aback for a second. I couldn't stay angry, let alone explain what I went through, thinking she was in trouble. I sat there staring at my wife as she continued her conversation with the so-called joy giver.

At the dawn of a new day, the news had spread like wildfire. The excitement was contagious as everyone who uses or once used MTN began to verify the authenticity of this news.

"Darling, won't you check your MTN SIM to verify if your debt was also cleared?" My wife indulged me with her unusual happiness.

"I am not owning MTN like you," I tried to stir up an argument.

"It's your loss. Opportunities like this don't come twice," she laughed, walking into the kitchen.

"Karma is waiting for you," I shouted.

"Whatever," she giggled.

Somehow, I felt this happiness would be short-lived, and karma would return with a devastating comeback.

The news trended for days, and I received an earful of how unlucky I was from my wife. I smiled and prepared myself to wipe a lot of tears from her face when karma hit.

It wasn't too long before Karma showed up. A very dedicated customer of hers, who had an outstanding debt of two hundred and fifty thousand naira due to be paid next week, suddenly died, and the family had relocated days before the news got to my wife.

I myself was shocked. In the game of occurrences, this is one of the best karma comebacks I had ever heard. I lost my wife to silence for days. I knew best not to engage her in any conversation. I wish Karma had considered me before striking this hard.

It's been two weeks, and on the first day of the third week, my wife returned to me. She tried so hard to avoid statements like "I told you," coming from me.

I am so itchy to tell her, "MTN collected their money with mad interest," but then, I am certain I would be single again at the speed of light.

THE END
